A Big Boy Comes to the D&SW

In August of this year the Union Pacific Railroad sold Big Boy 4-8-8-4 #4005 to the Denver and Southwesteern Railroad. As other US railroads are eliminating steam engines at a rapid pace the D&SW still remains firmly committed to steam. Big Boy 4005 was built by ALCO in 1941. We will use this engine on freight runs between Salida and Montrose. It will be able to pull freights up our 3% grades without the need of a helper engine. Below is shown a picture of #4005 during its first week on the D&SW pulling a freight up Tennessee Pass near the Belden Coal Mine.
